Benefits of a Woman-Owned Business
There are many reasons why you might want to start a business. Maybe you’re looking for some extra income to help make ends meet. Or maybe you’re wanting to create a more stable financial future for yourself and your family. Maybe you just want to build wealth.
Building wealth is a major reason why many people start businesses and there are many ways to do it. You can create passive income streams that will provide you with money even while you’re sleeping. Or you can build an active business that will give you the opportunity to make more money.
Looking at some of the wealthiest people in the world, it’s clear that having multiple income streams is the key to success. So whether you’re looking to make some extra money or become a millionaire, starting a business is a great way to do it.
Whatever your reason for starting a business, know that you’re not alone. There are over 12 million women-owned businesses in the United States generating $1.8 trillion a year, making up about 40% of all US businesses.
And that number is only growing! A new study by Gusto has shown that the number of women starting businesses in the US has increased from 28% in 2019 to 49% in 2021.
So if you’re thinking about starting a business, know that you’re in good company. But where do you start? What kind of business should you start?
Here are 5 ideas to get you started on your journey to make money online as a woman business owner.
1. Sell Products Online
One of the best ways to make money online is to sell products. This could be physical products that you make or source yourself, or digital products like ebooks or courses.
If you have a creative streak, you could sell handmade products like jewelry or pottery. Or, if you’re more of a people person, you could become a consultant or coach and sell your services online.
By starting a blog, one solo mompreneur was able to double her handmade Etsy business sales within a year. And Elvira is not alone. Many women have found success selling products online.
2. Start A Blog
If you enjoy writing, then starting a blog could be a great way to make money online. You can monetize your blog in many different ways, such as through advertising, affiliate marketing, or selling products and services.
There are many different types of blogs, so you can choose a niche that you’re passionate about. For example, you could start a mom blog, a fashion blog, or a food blog. Or you could start a general lifestyle blog and write about everything from motherhood to fashion to travel.
Rosemarie, a mom of two, started her blog Busy Budgeted as a part-time side gig and has managed to turn it into a $25k-a-month business. Rosemarie shares in this podcast that in under 3 years, she built a 6-figure blog by creating her own products and driving paid traffic.
3. Offer Virtual Assistant Services
If you’re organized and enjoy helping others, starting a virtual assistant business could be a great way to make money online. Virtual assistants provide administrative and clerical support to clients, such as answering emails, scheduling appointments, or managing social media accounts.
This is one of the quickest ways for women to make money online. To start a virtual assistant business, you’ll need to be good at multitasking and have strong organizational skills. You should also be able to communicate well and build relationships with your clients.
Abbey Ashley, a mompreneur and successful virtual assistant, started her business while on maternity leave with her first daughter. Within a few months, she booked enough clients that she never had to return to her old job.
4. Create and Sell an Online Course
If you’re an expert in a particular subject, you could create and sell an online course. This could be anything from cooking to fitness to web development.
Creating an online course is a great way to share your knowledge and build a business around something you’re passionate about. You can also make a significant amount of money from online courses, as they often sell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
Mother of 10 and star bread-maker Teresa Greenway got her start accidentally when she created a Facebook group about baking sourdough bread, and it quickly went viral with over 100 thousand members. She’s now turned her love of bread-making into a successful online course on Udemy that teaches others how to bake bread at home.

5. Do Freelance Work
One of the great things about the internet is that it’s made it easier than ever to find freelance work. Whether you’re a writer, graphic designer, web developer, or photographer, you can find work online.
For instance, Emeraldawnn uses the Fiverr platform to offer her freelance writing services. She earned a degree in Journalism and became a stay-at-home mom after the birth of her second child. Initially, she offered her services on other platforms, but in 2010, she discovered Fiverr and decided it was best for her situation.
It took time for her to make a name for herself, but after a few years, she managed to get a few regular clients who returned for her services months and years later. She makes a decent amount from the part-time gig. Emeraldawnn, who also works outside the home in a full-time position and is a single mother to three kids after the death of her husband, can work when she wants to work. Emeraldawnn likes the ability to turn down clients she doesn’t feel comfortable working with or has a project she doesn’t feel she can adequately do.
Her uniqueness is her desire to learn about new things and subjects. Emeraldawnn’s passion has always been writing, and when she realized working outside the home wasn’t feasible because of childcare costs, she turned to the Internet. Nearly 15 years later, she is still writing and turning out works of art on various subjects.
Freelancing offers flexibility and can be pretty rewarding, especially financially, if you put the time and effort into it.
3 Key Tips To Be Successful As An Online Mompreneur
Recognize Your Inner Strength
Women have incredible strength to face what is ahead of them. As a mother, this strength is reflected outward. As you become conscious of changes, your full awareness of the world changes, affecting everything around you, including your mompreneur business. This awareness provides you with that competitive edge to become better than your competitors.
Use your inner strength to your advantage so you can become successful.
Practice Self-Care
Mompreneurs often feel that there is never enough time in the day for a woman to spend on herself, but she has to make time… even if that means letting something go for the day.
It’s about giving yourself self-care. Going back to Emeraldawnn, she was constantly on the move and doing something. There was a time she slept no more than three hours a night, as she was constantly taking care of the house, the family and her clients.
However, she eventually realized she was giving everyone herself but not receiving anything in return.
Emeraldawnn decided it was time for some self-care. For her, self-care was in the form of the gym and realizing that she couldn’t do it all. She began turning down clients, even if the money was good and getting out of the house and into the gym for some downtime. She lost more than 100 pounds and felt better mentally, emotionally and physically. This self-care resulted in better business relationships as well as family relationships.
Time is always against moms; there’s just never enough time in the day to get all the things done that needs to be done. It’s often why women run themselves ragged, trying to be Supermom! To succeed as a mompreneur, you must be well-organized and effective personally and professionally. Schedule some time away from the computer and the family for just yourself. Then schedule time for just family and then just the business.
Trying to do things simultaneously will lead to burnout and feelings of inadequacy.
Turn off the electronics and step away. Your business won’t fail because you chose to do something else for a day. As long as you believe in yourself and give yourself the downtime your body needs, the work will show for it.
You Won’t Please Everybody
In certain jobs, such as freelance and virtual assistant jobs, you must remember that you won’t please everybody with your services. Try as you might; it’s just not going to happen. You can provide the best services in the world, but there will always be that one client who gets under your skin.
By remembering this fact, being a mompreneur can be less stressful. You can only do what you can, and hope your clients are pleased with what you have offered them. When someone becomes upset about your services, the key is to remain calm and listen to their point of view. Did you miss the mark on something? Were they expecting one thing, and you provided them with another? Many issues are the result of communication misunderstandings.
